Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bigbang?
There are many different types of bigbangs, all varying slightly, but generally a bigbang is a process in which authors write long fics (10,000 or 20,000 words) over a period of about 3 months and artists make art for them.

How do I sign up?
When sign-ups start, there will be one post for authors and artists.

~Writing Requirements~

What type of requirements are there for a fic?
Your fic must be at least 15,000 words long and, preferably, beta-read before the posting date. It must focus on or revolve around the the tv show Glee and its characters. Any pairing, story type, and time frame is allowed.

I've already been writing a Glee fic -- can I use that?
You are allowed to use a WIP in this bigbang, but the fic must be entirely new and unseen for it to qualify. So if you have a Glee story you've been working on prior to this challenge that you've only share with friends feel free to sign up with it.

What genres/pairings are allowed?
You may write/create art for whichever genre and/or pairing you choose. Crossovers and AUs are allowed as well as RPF.

I've got two ideas in my head ... can I write both?
Yes you can, as long as you think you'll be able to finish both by the deadline and that both will be more than 15,000 words.

Can I write with someone else?
Yes, you may co-author your bigbang if you want to.

~Artist Requirements~

How do I know what I'm making art for?
When the writers turn in their rough drafts, we'll make a claims post. In this post we'll include the story summary, the pairing and the fandom, as well as any warnings the author gives. You can choose which fic you'd like to create art for, and then that person's fic will get crossed off the list.

What are the requirements for art?
You can make whatever kind of art you feel like, in whichever medium. Drawing, painting, digital, manips, anything you can think of. We just ask that you put some time into it, as our authors have time into their stories.

How do I make a claim?
Claims are done on a first come, first serve basis. We will be putting up a f-locked post and the artists will reply to it with the story they want to claim. Comments will be unscreened so artists can see if something has already been claimed. Because the post will be locked make sure you join the community.

What happens if the number of authors doesn't match up with the number of artists?
We will do several rounds of claiming so that EVERY fic has art and in the event that fics outnumber artists. If it's the other way, we may open up the fics so that more than one artists is assigned to the same fic. Either way, everyone who wants to participate will get to participate.

What kind of timeline will I be under?
January 23rd, 2012: Prompt post opens
January 30th, 2012: Author and artist sign ups open
Febrauary 29th, 2012: Author sign ups close
February 25th, 2012: Checkpoint #1
March 23rd, 2012: Checkpoint #2
April 20th, 2012: Checkpoint #3
May 1st, 2012: Author's rough drafts due
May 6th, 2012: Fic summaries posted for artist & mixer claiming
June 11th, 2012: Final Fic and Art due
June 13th, 2011: Posting schedule posted
June 18th, 2012: Stories begin to be posted!

What's a checkpoint?
The first three checkpoints aren't mandatory. They're something to give you a feel on where a typical author should be at in their writing process. They're used for encouragement and motivation only.

The last checkpoint is for artists and is mandatory. This is just to make sure the authors and artists have been in contact with each other. It will be open for a week to give people time to check in.

What should my rough draft look like?
It needs to be at least 10,000 words, or 80% of your fic. You do not need to have your fic finished by this time however, you may still work on it and get it beta-read until your final fic and art is due. We just need to be able to reasonably verify that you are going to be able to post on your assigned date.

Can I have an extension?
We will be granting extensions on a case-by-case basis for rough drafts as long as your final fic or art is in by the due date. We would hope, however, that you use the checkpoints and all your available writing time to it's fullest.

~Community Requirements~

Can I join this comm?
Yes you can join the comm!, whether you are signing up or just want to write it. If you sign up as an Author or Artist you HAVE to join the community, this is so you can stay up to date on any posts made by mods and when it comes time for you to post you will have access.

The claims posts and checkpoints will be locked so you need to be a member of the community to view them.

~Posting Requirements~

What types of requirements are there for me to post my fic?
You must include a header with all regular information on it. This includes warnings. Not all of our readers like the same thing, so you are required to warn them. Besides that, you must include the fandoms you're writing in if the story is a crossover.

You also must include the art made for you in your masterpost.

Can I post it to my journal a few days early to show my friends?
No, the first time you post this bigbang must be on your reveal day. You can however post your fic to your journal in advance and have it locked for your eyes only.

My fic exceeds the character limit for a single post, what do I do?
Most people choose to break their fic up into 2 or more parts (whatever is best for you) and then create a master post that links to all the parts and the art from one place.

Where can I post?
That is up to you. We prefer you have your master post on LJ but you can post your story to dreamwidth or Archive of Our Own if you prefer it there.

Where can I upload my graphics?
There are several free resources such as Tinypic for images or .gif files, along with Photobucket.

How will I get my graphics to my author?
We will provide you with contact information once you are committed to an author. From their you can contact them to find out more about their interests, or simply send them the links to your final art.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to ask them below or contact a mod.

I was wondering if I want to write 2 different stories do I need to sign up twice? Once for each story or is the one sign up enough?
18th-Sep-2010 09:16 pm (UTC)
Just sign up once and include a note you are writing more than one story :D
27th-Sep-2010 04:11 am (UTC)
Can I ask for prompts to write one of my big bangs in my LJ and other communities??

Sorry but I'm getting kinda anxious that I'm not receiving any reply to this question, so I'm gonna go for it any way :/ If I'm actually unable to use prompts please tell me so

Sorry for the wait and you are absolutely allowed to do that, you are allowed to get as much help from your flist and other people as they will give (such as using support comms like ficfinishing and having someone read your fic as you write to give you encouragement).
9th-Oct-2010 05:06 am (UTC)
This has the potential of being a very stupid/awkward question, but I want to make sure I understand this correctly: when it mentions "type" for the header we need to include in our story, that refers to the type of genre, right?
14th-Oct-2010 11:02 am (UTC)
Mostly it refers to what type of story, het, gen, slash, crossover, etc. This is important for when I put together the posting schedule, I am going to try to make sure each posting day has a mixture of things do there is something for everyone.

Hi, I'm going to be away from the internets between Nov 26 and ~Dec 20th. I'm going with the assumption that I can just submit my draft early, but how do I go about submitting? Will the artist/mixer need to contact me at all?
25th-Oct-2010 03:28 am (UTC)
Okay, here's what we'll do. The instructions on how to submit your rough draft will be up before then so just make sure you send your rough draft and summary in before you leave and your fic will go into claiming like usual. I'll forward your artist whatever you send us so they can get to work right away (and don't have to wait till you get back) and let them know what day you will be back.

Final fic and art are due January 10th so make sure you have the completed version of the fic done by then. If you have any other questions or concerns just ask and I will help you in any way I can.
26th-Oct-2010 03:19 am (UTC)
I sadly need to drop out of this round. School is totally kicking my butt like you woun't believe how do I go about doing that properly?
4th-Nov-2010 10:43 am (UTC)
So sorry to hear that, right after the 3rd checkpoint there will be a drop out post but if you don't make it there its fine. I'll know from this comment. I hope things get easier for you and hope to see you again next round!
5th-Aug-2011 07:56 pm (UTC)
I've been working on a couple of fics anon in the memes, could I use those since I've been anon, or would it not count because they have been posted? Not all of it has been posted, though, and it is anonymous?

31st-Aug-2011 04:32 am (UTC)
When the new round starts you can use any fics you've been working on anon at a kink meme. You just can't keep posting it there and over half the words in the final version of the fic needs to be new (written during the new round).
8th-Feb-2012 02:57 am (UTC)
Sorry if we missed this anywhere....but if we are co-writing do we each need to sign up? OR is one post with both of us fine.

Also we may be writing two but not sure could we list both possibiltites and let you know by the second checkpoint?
18th-Feb-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
Just one of you needs to sign up with both your names! and that's fine, good luck!
14th-Feb-2012 06:11 pm (UTC) - Posting question
I have a question about posting. It seems that every author must post their fic on a certain day. Is this negotiable? I'm thinking about signing up, but I will be traveling abroad in June and July and there may be days when I don't have internet access.
29th-Feb-2012 10:13 am (UTC) - Re: Posting question
Authors will be assigned posting days but when they send in their final drafts there will be a portion asking when they CAN'T post, and I will do my best to make sure every author posts at a time when they are able to and ready to.

When you say the stories must focus on Glee characters, does that mean that I CANNOT write a pre-series fic about Finn's parents or Kurt's parents from when they're kids? I mean, Finn or Kurt would be in the fic, but they'd be little kids and the story wouldn't revolve around them. Yes? No?
1st-Apr-2012 01:58 am (UTC)
Well both Burt and Carol have been on the show so they count as Glee characters - stories here don't have to focus on only the main cast. So yes!
6th-Apr-2012 11:20 pm (UTC)
What happens if I know I can't have a draft by May 1st? It was iffy when I just had to do three hefty research projects and grade a ton of student papers. Now that I'm moving, it's pretty much impossible.
7th-Apr-2012 12:50 am (UTC)
If you aren't able to turn in a rough draft by May 1st you can always switch to the Unofficial track. What this means is you can send your rough draft in with Unofficial in the subject line. The story won't go into claims but you will have until the final due date (June 8th) to get it done. If you are able to by then I will do my best to arrange an artist for you and you will post with everyone else.

17th-Apr-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
HIIII. where should i drop out? (also. yeah. =| sorry.)
20th-Apr-2012 09:00 am (UTC)
Here is fine! I'll remove you from the spreadsheet.
15th-May-2012 03:30 pm (UTC)
Hello, lovely mod!

Are there any people who have expressed an interest or ability to beta for us? I have one beta, but wouldn't mind running it through someone else as well. Do you know of any communities that might be helpful? Thanks so much!
29th-May-2012 11:56 am (UTC)
All I know of is gleebetas, although you can try the support community as well to see if anyone is interested. If that fails you can always ask for a beta at a Glee community specific to your pairing!
24th-May-2012 02:35 pm (UTC)
So, my story's finished (beginning, middle, end) and to my utter surprise it's only a little bit over 10.000 words but I really want to participate :( Could you possibly accept it? Thanks in advance :)
29th-May-2012 11:57 am (UTC)
Would it be possible to increase it at all, even by a few or couple thousands of words.

Even if it stays around 10,000 I will accept it, but if you could get it any higher that would be amazing!
2nd-Jun-2012 03:02 pm (UTC)
Just curious, are we still keeping the June 8th final due date, because there was never the final checkpoint on May 25th, so I was curious if we were pushing things back?
6th-Jun-2012 12:42 pm (UTC)
Sorry I missed the checkpoint, I've been trying to wrap things up with claims. A post will be going up with instructions on how to turn in final works and author/artists will be given till the 11th to do so. Posting will be pushed back a few days (starting the 18th) to give authors and artists a little more breathing room before things start.
